ATTENTION WINDOWS XP USERS
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT
It is necessary that you follow the instructions I'm going to talk to you about so that you can close a very compromising security hole in Windows XP. I listened to a revered computer show last night and I found this out. You must unregister a DLL file in Windows Xp by going to run, pasting it from the Website and hitting ok. This a hole for which Microsoft does not yet have a patch. It will come out on October 7th. When it does come out, I will let you know how to reregister this dll file, which you currently don't need to run any program anyway. This is totally safe. I did it this morning and it only took seconds. So... Listen listen to your screenreaders and read carefully, please go to
www.wgnradio.com Then click on the link that says Steve and Johnnie's Blog after Dark. It's there on the main page! For Jaws users, List your links using Shift plus f7, then press s until you hear Steve and Johnnie's blog after Dark. The first thing posting on there, right off the top of the heading will be the information I have told you about and they proceed to give you the line that you MUST copy and paste in the Run thinggy in the start menu. They also tell you to restart your computer after pasting and running this file. DO NOT GO LOOKING FOR THIS FILE AND DELETING IT MANUALLY. The reason being that Windows Xp will reinstall it for you if you do it this way. As I said earlier, I will let you know how to reregister it will also be very easy and I'll let you know when the patch comes out.
Please go to
http://www.wgnradio.com Find Steve and Johnnie's blog after dark and proceed from there. Read what it has to say and follow the directions. One more thing: the string that you must type in to run this thing has quotes at the end. Make sure to copy and paste those too. the whole line they will tell you about!
And finally, Make sure your link says Steve and Johnnie's Blog After dark before clicking on it or hitting enter.
Thank you!
Personaly i wouldn't do that. It might be a new type of virous or something and as long as my computer works fine i don't see the need to do it.
Anyway just a corection. For the list of links press jaws key+F7 not shift. Jaws key is either capslock or insert-0 on the numeric keyboard depending if you have a pc or laptop. But i would suggest to anyone don't try it until a comunity leader or admin reply to say that it is safe to do it.
But it is just a personal advice.
Thanks
As a community Leader, I wouldn't like to say yes or no to this procedure as I don't have the know-how. It is up to individuals to do their own researching before carrying this out. Zone staff can't take responsibility for advising people one way or another.
This is totally safe. I wouldn't have done it myself if I didn't know it wasn't. Believe me I wouldn't even install anything or do anything to change the computer. This doesn't affect the computer though. This is not a virus, but if you don't unregister this DLL file, you will be at risk. I have another site for you. check out www.grc.com You will find more info there, but go to Wgn radio first so you can red the details without all the jargon.
hum, thanks, but think i'll just wait, oct 7th is right around the corner.
yep. microsoft will fix it then. Plus, i'll have to integrate the updates in to my slipstreamed XP disk anyways, so might as well wait for microsoft patch day..
i'll wait, till i can get help.
if i don't know what i'm doing, then i'm stuck
Agree with everyone here. I'll wait until it's released. Of course my computer's automatic updates is set to install patches as they are released from Microsoft.
I wouldn't fool around unless you're a licensed computer tech.
It may be safe for some but not for me. I don't feel challenged enough to do this so will wait for the patch. Also not worth the time having my tech/friend come do it for me since when it's out I'll have to have them come back to re register.
Troy
Frankly, I'd feel safer if you would at least post the name of the dll file, so I could do my own research. As it stands, I now have to listen to a radio show, which I'm not sure I want to do.
I try to keep up with this stuff, and haven't heard of it, but that doesn't mean it's not a threat. It just means I'd like more information.
Thanks,
Bob
Strange!
